In Greek mythology there is a story about a nymph named Clytie who was infatuated with Helios, the god of the sun. To gain Helios' notice Clytie conspired to expose the current object of his affections with horrible consequences. This caused Helios to harden his heart to her entirely, so in desperation Clytie stripped herself bare and lay out on the rocks. For nine days she would watch him as he traveled on his daily course through the sky taking no food or water. On the ninth day the nymph was transformed into a sunflower where she continues to track her love across the sky to this day.
